In Nadi astrology, your thumb impression is not read for its ridges the way palmistry works — instead, it is used purely as an identifier, to help the astrologer narrow down which bundle of leaves might contain the one written in your name.
Traditionally, a man's right thumb and a woman's left thumb impression is taken. Leaves are pre-sorted into categories based on such impressions, and the astrologer compares yours against these categories to locate a likely match.

Once a possible bundle is identified, the astrologer reads a few opening verses aloud. If details such as your name, your parents' names, and basic facts about your life match, the leaf is confirmed as yours and the full reading proceeds.
If no leaf matches on the first attempt, it does not necessarily mean no leaf exists — sometimes further categories need to be checked, or the leaf may simply not be among the bundles currently preserved.
