Long before paper was widely available, dried palm leaves (from the Palmyra or talipot palm) served as a durable writing surface across South India. Text was inscribed using a sharp iron stylus, and the grooves were then rubbed with a mixture of charcoal or turmeric to make the writing visible.

The Preparation Process
Before a leaf can be inscribed, it is cut, boiled, dried and pressed flat over several weeks so that it will not curl or crack once the stylus work begins. This preparation stage is as much a part of the tradition as the astrological content itself, and it explains why authentic Nadi leaves have a distinct texture and colour compared to ordinary dried leaves.
Once inscribed, bundles of leaves are strung together with cord and stored in temple archives or private collections, organised so that a matching leaf can later be located using thumb impression identification. This careful physical organisation is what allows a specific person's leaf to be found decades or generations after it was first written.
